MLK Dinner

Join one of the nation’s largest university-sponsored events commemorating Dr. martin Luther King. Last year, more than 2,000 people attended SU’s event at the Carrier Dome.

The event which includes dinner, a speaker and awards is FREE to ESF and SU students with a meal plan. Sign up TODAY with your RA. The dinner and program begin at 5pm Sunday January 24th, 2010 at the Carrier Dome.

This years key note speaker is Gwen Ifill. Ifill is a moderator and managing editor of PBS’ “Washington Week” and senior correspondent for “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”

Save a life in Haiti

Give blood and save a Haiti earthquake survivor
Friday January 22nd from 1:30-6:30p in the Goldstein student center

Sign-up for a time slot beginning tomorrow (1/20) in the Goldstein atrium or the South Campus Residence Life Office. WALK-INS on Friday are also welcome.

The Red Cross has communicated that blood is in extreme high need due to blood being shipped to Haiti and also needed for use in the US. Do your part and give blood! A portion of the blood gathered during this drive will be sent to help earthquake survivors.

Holiday Heros

Skyhall residents- Want to be a Holiday hero?? Well here is your chance. Each year, during the holiday season, the Residence Hall Association for SU/ESF encourages ESF and SU students to “adopt” local low-income children that would otherwise receive nothing. This year the Skyhalls have been challenged to gather 56 toys for children ages 5-11. As a community let’s work to bring joy to these 56 children this season.

How can you help??
1) Go to the Skyhall main desk and ask for an envelope. Put your name (First and last) and any size monetary donation ($1 and over please) into the envelope.
2) Bring a toy valued at approximately $10-12 to the Skyhall main desk and fill out an envelope with your name (First and Last) and a brief description of the toy. If you would like to “go in on a toy together” just write all names on the envelope. Please do not purchase items valued greater than $12.

Each person who gives a monetary or toy donation will earn 5 COLOR WAR points for their floor. After the toys are gathered they will be wrapped and then donated to the children.

As a community, let’s work together this holiday season to demonstrate the power of giving!

A contest to design a sticker to be used in a promotional campaign to reduce lighting on campus is currently underway. Designs should be eye-catching and message oriented. This sticker will be placed over light switch plates in locations across campus. The contest is open to all SU & ESF students.

The first place winner will receive a $250 gift certificate to the SU Bookstore. The campus will vote to determine the best sticker.

Spring Break 2010- Make a Difference.

Alternative Spring Break 2010
Is going to Washington DC

This year the Alternative Spring Break group and twenty students will have the opportunity to attend a seven day trip to Washington DC to take part in service work with the hungry and homeless population. We will be participating in a four day volunteer camp with the Youth Services Opportunity Project. In addition to service work, there will also be opportunities to take in some of the sights of the DC Metro area. The total cost of the trip is $200 with all meals and activities included

The trip is open to all SU and ESF students living in on-campus housing. To be eligible for the Alternative Spring Break trip, students must attend one of the information sessions listed below and complete an application. The application is available online at http://orl.syr.edu/code/civicEng/ and is due via email to Jenni Greeno (jsgreeno@syr.edu) by Monday, December 14, 2009.

New Floor Kudos- As decided upon by the RA staff
*In order for floors to receive floor kudos things done on the floor must hit one of the 4 categories. If they hit all four then they receive points for all, if they only hit one category then they receive points for that one category. The overall attitude category is an automatic 5 pts because it includes spirit, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm. For Committee choice Megan and Sheriah decide what they are giving points to and how many points you get. Depending on the programs done one or more floors may receive points per week.

The new system was created to challenge floors to go beyond movie watching and things done on the floor. We encouarge residents to think big, look beyond the floors and work to make an impact on the greater Syracuse community. Is this allowed in my room?

Have you ever asked yourself “I wonder if this 8” fish fillet knife, my kerosene fuel for my cook stove, and this midevil sword is allowed in my residence hall room?” The the obvious answer is NO. Other items are not as obvious. See below for items that are prohibitted in the the residence halls.

Prohibited items include:
· Candles,inscense, oil lamps, halogen lamps and multiheded lamps
· Hazardous materials (flamable liquids etc.)
· Decorations that impede door access or more than 50% of door covered
· Lofts of questionable construction
· Posters or tapestries less than 18 inches from ceiling, on ceiling or covering lights/outlets
· Pets other than fish
· Appliances including but not limited to: Coffee makers, foreman grills, rice cookers, hot pots, space heaters, toasters (All appliances for kitchens have to be purchased by the hall and kept for common use. Personal appliacnces such as these are not permitted)
· Weapons- Guns (including BB, airsoft, paintball,) , Swords (Of any kind), Knives with blades longer than 4 inches and that are not swiss army type (ie switch blades or hunting knives) OR for cooking purposes.
· Drugs or drug paraphernalia
· Alcohol or alcohol containers (if under 21)

Also-
Smoke detectors and window screens are there for your safety and the safety of our community! At no point should you be disabling detectors or removing screens from windows. Another fire safety issues is outlets that are overloaded with too many things. Use power strips with surge protectors , make sure refridgertors are plugged directly into the wall and that power strips and extention cords are not plugged into each other.

How to Save a Life!!!

Yes, the title to this post is meant to be the same as the song "How to Save a life" by Fray. Have you ever listened to the lyrics of this song? Many of us have. We all know what the song is about, yet we are still afraid to talk about it. Do you know the signs of suicide and depression? Would you know how to save the life of a friend, loved one or classmate if they were in trouble?

THIS SUNDAY October 18th 6pm in Sky 3.2 lounge ESF senior counselor Heather Rice is presenting information on depression and suicide! Come... as a result you may save a life!!!

Roasted Pumpkin seeds

Baked Pumpkin Seeds -

Preheat oven to 350°F. Separate the pumpkin seeds from the fibers. Wash, drain, and dry the seeds on paper towels. Coat 11/2 cups seeds with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil. Toss the seeds with salt (or omit salt and toss seeds with any of the suggested seasonings below), and spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake, stirring occasionally, 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Deviled Pumpkin Seeds Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon chili pepper.

Sugar and Spice Pumpkin Seeds Add 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice.

Cheesy Seeds Add 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese and 1/2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning.

This weeks floor kudos winner (receiving top points) receives just that, Kudos bars for the entire floor!

This week's winner is:

Sky 2.3-The residents of sky 2.3 have taken on a momentous task . Up to a dozen residents on this floor embarked on a week long vegan cleanse. Those who are already vegan may be asking, "What's the big deal?." The deal is, they are going cold turkey (pun intended), and for former carnivores that's a big lifestyle shift! A big WAY TO GO for Sky 2.3 for trying something new. We are rooting for all of you. So you don't fall off the band wagon, your Kudos bars will be passed out NEXT week. We do not want to be the cause of anyone having to devour the Burger King burger with 8 patties. Along with their vegan fast, the floor had time to plan surprise birthday parties and extricate the stinky communal fridge of all the leftovers that were growing fuzz. 30 points

Other point winners include:

Sky 3.2- This week the residents of 3.2 sported the high fashion of polyethylene. Their trash bag formal wear was impressive. Residents with Y-Chromosomes have been sporting their pink tie-dye and the floor has united for tea and ice cream parties. 20 points

Sky 1.2- Embracing the spirit of sustainability this floor has began their own plastic bag recycling program. Leave a bag, take a bag. Also, in the spirit of democracy, the floor embraced community council floor president elections and held candidate speeches. Great job. 20 points

Sky 1.1- For your trip to Ithaca, attending ESF Soccer games and SU football. Also, your unheralded dedication to prevent dryer fires by nominating lint queens for the floor. 15 points

Sky 1.3-For making healthy choices and deciding to turn in early for the sake of academics and personal wellness. 10 points.

Sky 3.1- 10 points for your communal record of the days in which floor members took their first breaths on earth. Also, there was chatter about a kick ass apple crisp!

Sky 3.3- 10 points for a Monty Python and the Holy Grail viewing night. If anyone ever takes a Moral Philosophy: Environment and Animals class, the scene with the rabbit jumping up to the guys throat makes a great presentation media clip.

Sky 2.1- 10 points for R-E-S-P-E-C-T! and hitting the books in 2.2.

Sky 2.2- 10 points for your apple picking, movie night and providing your fearless leader with the appropriate wavelengths to heat her food.

Below are the clues and their answers:

SU Clues:
1.) Go deep down where the sun won't shine and some of America's Best Dance Crew hangs out there (Jabawakee Cafe) Pictures too dark to scan. 3.2 and 3.1 where the only two floors to successfully locate this cafe located next to the Schine underground.

2.) Most freshman walk up these steps to find that the door they want to go in, is not a door at all. Take your picture here (Steps of Carnegie library) 3.) Joe Biden studied at this building (College of Law)4.) Before Otto showed up, this guy represented Syracuse University in sports. He left in 1978 and all that is left is his statue. (Saltine Warrior) 5.) In the movie "The Express", this statue was in the movie but not here in 1959 (Ernie Davis statue) 6.) In the 1960's, higher education was soaring high with the "birds" and this building was erected. (Bird Library) 7.) Careful who you kiss on the Hall of Languages west lawn, you may find your soul mate there (Kissing Bench) 8.) In 2008, over 5 million dollars was spent to complete this brand new building where you get to dunk your teachers in the spring (Life Science Complex) 9.) This is the second largest academic unit at Syracuse University, and Donovan Mcnabb was in the college. You end up spending most of your class time on the Connective Corridor. Take your picture at the main campus building(Visual Performing Arts College-Crouse castle) 10.) When looking from afar this place looks like a giant marshmallow filled with cold air conditioning; however it's really just a loud house (The Dome)ESF Campus Clues:
1.) Find the man that wrote the Gettysburg Address reading a book. (Lincoln Statue) 2.) Find the building named after a celestial body (Moon Library) 3.) Find something from Sherwood Forest (Oak tree with Robin Hood forest sign in front)4.) Find a new type of ecological roof that is helping us "Go Green" (Green roof or photovoltaic roof signs) 5.) Find panels that help us harness the power of the sun (picture of solar panels on building) 6.) Find the pillared building with a clock (Marshall hall) 7.) Find trees that have been genetically altered (Trees outside of Moon Library)8.) Find a building where paper is made (Walters hall) 9.) Find a 'rain garden' (rain garden signs) 10.) Find the original building that made up SUNY-ESF (Bray Hall)

RETREAT! Get High at Orenda Springs

Sky 2 and Sky 1.1/1.2. went on their retreat to Orenda Springs two Sundays ago. It was a fantastic day! Great weather, good food and most importantly great camaraderie. See below for pictures of the day!

1.1- 20 points for most jumbo tron appearances, the creation of a creative contraceptive dispenser, and the yellow limo choir concert post retreat. 30 points for Amy, Kelly, Danielle and Collene for their positive attitudes during the flood ordeal. 10 points for Michelle for hosting a flood refugee (Note: Beginning NOW no points will be awarded to ANY floor for emergencies such as this. As a floor, work to avoid emergencies from occurring in the first place!) – total points 60

3.1- Oh! Where to start! First, thank you for the masterpiece of literary prose. It was great to hear everything your floor has done since the beginning of the semester. Your floor is a valued part of the Skyhalls community. Keep up the energy and excitement. For this week: 2 points for the list of activities in writing, 5 points for Jeff who dressed and talked like a pirate for an entire day, 5 points for your floor hockey team (GO PURPLE HAZE!), 5 points for tea party bio study session and other study session, 5 points for your zoo trip, and 10 points for hosting a flood refugee. REMEMBER: When having fun as a floor please abide by fire regulations. Keep the lights ON and only have a safe number of people in one room! Total 32points

LC World Tour, Banner Competition & Kudos

CONGRATULATIONS SUNY-ESF for being one of three the overall LC World tour banner competition winners. You have won a pizza party for the entire LC. Since our Transfer friends are part of our community they too will get pizza during the celebration. The date of the pizza extravaganza is to be determined. WE will let you know!

NOW FOR COLOR WARS... Drum roll please... Oh! Wait! You've probably already heard...

Each floor gets 20 points for their fantastic efforts with their floor banner but the COLOR WAR winners get extra: 1st place (Sky 3.1) 30 points, 2nd place (Sky 2.3) 20 points, 3rd place (Sky 3.3) 10 points.

KUDOS: Like we advertised your RA's are relaying the awesome things YOU are doing on your floors. We are all very impressed with your initiative and drive. Below, are your good doings and the points you have earned.

This Weeks winners are:

Sky 2.1- Gets the "Quirky, Unique and Creative"award for their weekly black tie dinners where everyone gets gussied up in their formal wear and heads to Le Goldstein for some gourmet eats. Also an unidentified sky 2.1 resident (we think she was from sky 2.1) saw a bulletin board on Sky 2.1 with a flapping boarder and fixed it herself! Great job. (10 points)

Sky 1.3-Gets the "Happy Birthday" award for the double layer cake that was made for a fellow floormate. Yummm! (5 points)

Sky 1.1- Is awarded the "Stay Limber" award for the well attended Pilates classes that take place in the lounge! Watch out! They must be training for future events. (5 points)

Sky 2.2- is awarded the "Let's play" award for the highly entertaining and competitive ping pong tournament that takes place in the lounge! (5 points)

Sky 2.3 is awarded the "Get Smart" award for the 10 minute Chinese language lessons and the guitar lessons that residents are providing for each other. Great job supporting the arts and global communication! (5 points)

But I did something great too!! Why was mine not mentioned?-Well for one thing if your RA does not know they will not be able to realy what you have done. Invite them to participate or let them know what happened!

The War Begins.

The Color War commences this Friday September 11th 5:30pm on the SU quad during the LC world tour. Sport your floor color and attend the world tour. If you did not sign up for a ticket. Do not fret. The tickets were for food only. No ticket? Attend anyway to represent your floor and have fun with the music, inflatables, and games. Your RD and ARD will be awarding points for the floor(s) that creates the best portion of the overall SUNY-ESF& SU banner. Also points will be awarded to floors for attendance and color representation.

Throughout this week and next, floors will have the opportunity to tie-dye shirts that correspond with their floor color. Dye shirts and have plenty of attire of your floor color!

Other COLOR WAR events include:

Vote for Community Council Representatives- Ballots for voting will be placed in your mailbox soon. Write your building and flr number and the person you are voting for! Floors will get points that equal that precentage of residents who vote. For example if a floor gets 55% of the floor to vote your floor gets 55 color war points.

Floor Kudos- Do great things on or with your floor- Study together, do random acts of kindness for others, appreciate your housekeeper etc. Each week your RA's will share the good you have done for the skyhalls community at staff meeting and your RD and ARD will pick KUDO winners. There can be one or more winners each week. Points will be given and your floor KUDO will be featured on the blog!

South Campus Block Party!!

On Sunday September 6th Skyhall residents and RA's enjoyed the festivities of the South Campus Block Party provided by SCOPE and Orange Night Live. The food, games, projects and inflatables were a fantastic break from studies. Above is a group picture of Skyhall residents relaxing in the shade. Below Colin (Sky 2.1) and Jordan (Sky 2.2) prepare to take on the obstacle course. Corrine (Sky 2.2) and Jade (Sky 2.1) are neck and neck at the top of the slide. Corinne was victorious though Jade gave it her all. Finally a rousing game of Ninja entertained many.

COLOR WARS!!!

On the 7th day, upon a grassy knoll, the citizens of Skyhalls converged for the epic beginning of COLOR WARS. Beneath a brooding sky, the people donned their identifying hues as "Gumby the Great" inspired exalting cheers. This jubilant gathering was an infectious comencement to the battle of the spectrum!

Skyhalls Move-In 09

A very big thank you to all of the Skyhalls RA staff, move-in volunteers, goon squad members, ESF Orientation Leaders, Officer Joe Shanley, and SU Orientation leaders for an exemplary 1st day of Skyhalls opening. We moved in over 275 students in a 6 hour period. We are very excited for the year and are very happy to have you living with us.

On Tuesday August 25th the Skyhalls resident advisor staff utilized their final free time before hall opening to give back to the Syracuse community. The staff headed to the Salvation Army School Age program to share their expertise. The kids built bridges and paper towers, prepared eggs to survive a 8 ft drop, cooked s'mores in a pizza box solar oven, designed hover crafts, learned about the transfer of energy and the power of the four senses. Staff and kids both enjoyed the morning. Great job Skyhalls staff you are truly and example to others!

To continue the spirit of service watch for weekly Skyhall/South Campus service trips beginning September 18th.

Welcome to the Skyhalls! The Resident Advisor (RA) staff as well as your Residence Director (RD) and Assistant Residence Director (ARD) are very excited for your arrival. In less than two weeks we will come together as a community and embark on the great adventure called college. We are lucky this year as we have all of our SUNY-ESF 1st years/transfers and our SU transfers living with us. Our hall community will provide for many great opportunities and experiences. Hall staff are looking forward to showing you the ropes of the Skyhalls, South Campus, Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF. We will be utilizing this blog throughout the year for announcements and "shout outs". If you attend events and check back frequently and you may eventually find pictures of you! As we prepare for your arrival we would like to introduce ourselves and provide a few words of wisdom. See below for our staff bios and pictures.
